Women eating carbs during pregnancy or planning to become pregnant should avoid diets that eliminate carbohydrates, as they may increase the risk of having babies with birth defects.

A diet low in carbohydrates during pregnancy would promote congenital malformations, according to a study published in the medical journal Birth Defects Research.


Researchers at the University of North Carolina in the United States conducted a study with 11,385 participants to understand carbohydrates roles in infant development.

The results of this study revealed that women eating carbs during pregnancy are 30% more likely to have babies with neural tube defects, such as spina bifida (spine and spinal cord malformations) and anencephaly (absence of brain and skull parts), which can lead to permanent disability and infant death.

Disease Control and Prevention Center recommends that women who may become pregnant take a multi-vitamin daily containing at least 400 micrograms of folic acid before and during pregnancy.
